Pentax K30

When filling in the 'Cash back' form online to redeem the CHF 85.- from Pentax, one of the questions asked went something like: Did the cash back offer influence your purchase? Unfortunately there were only two answers to choose from. “Yes” or “No”.

I was obviously delighted to receive about £60 simply for buying a new camera, and it may well have nudged me into buying at this point in time and not in a month or so, and So I answered “Yes”

But having thought about my motives for buying the Pentax K30, I think perhaps “No” may well have been a more realistic answer.

Over the last couple of years I've been thinking deeply about whether to buy a DSLR or not, several have been in the running, in particular the Nikon 5100, and 7000. I even considered very seriously whether to go for one of those really nice retro looking compact cameras from Fujifilm.

But having taken a look at the K30 from Pentax the decision became a lot easier. Of course I took a peek at Nikon's newer 5200 and 7100, and of course Pentax's K50 set me thinking, but the K30 caught my imagination again and again.

Inevitably doubts arose, as is so often the case when I fancy a new piece of hardware. Do I really need a new camera? Would I be better off buying the K50? Should I go for the Nikon? After all Nikons are readily available in all the shops whereas Pentax seems to be a non-runner around these parts.

But then my thoughts strayed to things historical, the famous Spotmatic, David Bailey and last but not least my very own “ME Super” which after over 30 years good service, is still going strong! (well, I hope it is because the film taken recently is being developed as I write. I hope to put a few B&W film images in the gallery before the end of August.)

Anyway, to cut a long story short, I decided to take the plunge and profit from the cash back offer and order online - I took possession of my shiny new blue K30 last Friday evening.

I haven't really put it through its paces yet, but I have shot a few pictures with my old manual focus lenses and they worked a treat. I've been strolling through the maze of settings and experimenting with aperture/speed priority, high ISO values and digital filters. I have even shot a couple of HDR photos. So many variations and effects, and a very chubby handbook will provide hours of technical fun. Hopefully I'll soon be in a position to take photographs quite naturally, without having the urge to press buttons, and the emphasis will soon be on the artistic rather than the technical aspects of photography. Either way I'm having lots of fun :-)

Thank you Pentax, the 60 quid was indeed very welcome, but I'm convinced I would have bought the K30 anyway.
