Stage One - Sargans to Kreuzlingen

Around the Edge started on a sunny Sunday in March. As with most project starts, motivation and enthusiasm were both at a maximum.

On a whim, we decided to begin the journey in Sargans, a small town situated not far from the south west corner of Liechtenstein. There's a castle where the Swiss flag is proudly flown and its raised position affords splendid views of both the Swiss and Liechtenstein mountains.

Travelling north through the very flat Rhein valley, Liechtenstein is to the east and the Swiss mountains of St. Gallen to the west. We stopped to stretch our legs in Werdenberg, apparently the smallest town in Switzerland and for a coffee at Rheineck before exploring the north easterly corner of the country. There is an international airport at Altenrhein and it's here that the river Rhein flows in to Lake Constance. On the opposite river bank is Austria.

From the north eastern corner we travelled west along the shores of Lake Constance with Germany across the water to the north.

The days are quite short in March and dusk was descending rapidly. By the time we drove into Kreuzlingen darkness had descended.
