Day 18 from 37 – 31st July 2012

37 Days – Holiday project.

Nothing like a bit of back lighting, that’s what I always say. Well perhaps not always, but I do like it when I see it. Just before 8pm this evening, as the sun beamed through the large main railway station windows I loved it.

Day 17 from 37 – 30th July 2012

37 Days – Holiday project.

The town’s bus station is currently being redone, brought up to scratch, all nice and posh. A traditional photograph of the building site would perhaps have been more informative and would certainly have provided a valuable photo documentation for future generations. However, I think this picture somehow captures the holiday season, the hot sunny days, the balmy evenings and those dreamy hours spent reclining by the pool…… eyeing up the cranes 🙂

Day 16 from 37 – 29th July 2012

37 Days – Holiday project.

Speaking of Olympics: Today I listened to all sorts of interesting reasons why ‘we’ didn’t win a bicycle race. It would seem that the other teams didn’t help us, in fact they even tried to win themselves! Well that doesn’t seem at all fair!… but as I’ve said, I know nothing about sport and even less about cycling so perhaps I’d better change the subject.

I feel quite proud to show these images of park benches, the very same model as those dotted around the Olympic village. First tried and tested just ten minutes a way from where I live.

Day 15 from 37 – 28th July 2012

37 Days – Holiday project.

The day started with breakfast out and the weekly shopping in a pleasantly deserted shopping centre. Then, before cutting the lawn and pottering around in the garden, I went for a leisurely walk with the dog.

Day 14 from 37 – 27th July 2012

37 Days – Holiday project.

By no stretch of the imagination could I be thought of as having even the slightest interest in sport. There was some sort of football event this year, and I’m still not really sure whether it was a European or a World cup 😉 Apparently there was an Olympic game somewhere just four years ago… and I think I missed it

So it’s all the more amazing that here I am, sitting in front of the tele watching the opening ceremony of this years games in London.

The whole planet seems to be talking about it, and as they’ve spent all that money, the very least I can do is watch it. There was no excuse for missing it either because this model Big Ben advertising the Swiss TV coverage just couldn’t be overlooked as I made my way home this evening.

Day 13 from 37 – 26th July 2012

37 Days – Holiday project.

As I made my weary way home this evening, I could never even begin to imagine the excitement that was to come. As the evening cooled and the sun slid slowly towards the horizon, we harvested our complete onion crop. Compared with other years it is somewhat modest, but I’m eagerly looking forward to a large cheese and onion sandwich.

Day 12 from 37 – 25th July 2012

37 Days – Holiday project.

Speaking of art….

Plans are afoot to erect an original, large and to many no doubt completely out of place, dockside crane on the banks of the stretch of river shown in today’s photos. It’s a very controversial project (surprise surprise) but according to the newspaper that I read, it should be standing there in all its glory in 2014.

Day 11 appendix

Taking a moment to do a bit of research, the web has now revealed all about the “Art and the City, public art festival”, a piece of which I photographed and discussed in yesterdays ‘Day 11 from 37’ entry.

It makes very interesting reading, and of course when one understands what it’s all about, what it means, what statement it’s trying to make, what the artist is actually saying, well I suppose the object doesn’t seem quite so obscure or misplaced.

Day 11 from 37 – 24th July 2012

37 Days – Holiday project.

It can be said that weeds in the garden are plants in the wrong place. Dust and dirt around the house is simply material in the wrong place. What about art then….

Art?  Not all of it gets me excited, a lot of it I don’t understand, much of it I don’t particularly like, but more often than not I can at least appreciate that it’s well done. Perfectly drawn, brilliantly put together, with much skill and patience beautifully made.

But what is this?

Day 11 – Art from a distance: Panasonic DMC-LX2; f/4; 1/160s;

I’m convinced that the artist who did this knows lots and lots about his or her subject. The people who commissioned the work are no doubt very… arty.

Day 11 – From behind… or perhaps not: Panasonic DMC-LX2; f/3.2; 1/125s;

Day 11 – From the side…almost certainly: Panasonic DMC-LX2; f/4; 1/160s;

I don’t want to criticise too much because I’m sure everyone concerned meant well, and there are surely excellent reasons for displaying this object next to a beautifully modern building with clean lines and oodles of style.

Day 11 – Scrap iron perhaps?: Panasonic DMC-LX2; f/4; 1/125s;

But somehow I can’t help but think that it looks like something the builders forgot.

Day 11 – Left behind?: Panasonic DMC-LX2; f/4.9; 1/80s;

Perhaps that’s the whole point…. It’s a conversation piece?

Day 10 from 37 – 23rd July 2012

37 Days – Holiday project.

Some like them, some don’t. I think the round thingies, resembling something between a climbing wall and a Lego brick, quite fascinating. The building, a shopping centre with flats, is about 12 months old and the weather has not yet taken its toll on the facade.
