Prague

Prague has been on the “Places to Visit” list for quite some time, and at long last we actually visited the city in May 2016.

The usual preliminaries were discussed at length and travel arrangements, dates etc. were dealt with during many happy hours of online activity. I suppose from where I live, the car would have possibly been almost as quick and quite likely cheaper than air travel. However both lacked the the sense of adventure and romance, so we decided upon the night train. The “City Night Line” rail service from Zurich to Prague takes about 13 hours and seems to go the very long way round. A night sleeper never ceases to fascinate. Unfortunately there is no restaurant car, but the conductor/guard/waiter served a very tasty goulash soup and a pleasant wine. He also made sure we had an enjoyable breakfast with coffee etc. etc.

Arriving at the main station punctually at 9.30 am, it was a mere 10 minute walk to our hotel, and from there only a few minutes to the old town.

The old part of the city is very very beautiful and I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many tourists in one place. With only having three days in the city we were limited to three lunches and three evening meals, our biggest challenge was choosing what not to eat - the choice of restaurants is quite overwhelming.

A full description of our three days in Prague would be boring to most, but a couple of things are perhaps worth a mention. The old town has many cobbled streets, so there’s no excuse for not hearing an approaching car. The city has some beautiful pavements with quite intricate patterns.

Cyclists seem quite respectable, they seem to look where they are going and actually ride on the roads and not on the pavements.

As is the case with most of my travel entries, I have no intention of re-writing the numerous guide books, and have therefore simply included pictorial impressions of Prague. If anyone would like to know more about a picture, feel free to contact me.
